Such a beautiful poem. It seems divinely inspired.
MY DOVES
OPPOSITE my chamber window,
On the sunny roof, at play,
High above the city's tumult,
Flocks of doves sit day by day.
Shining necks and snowy bosoms,
Little rosy, tripping feet,
Twinkling eyes and fluttering wings,
Cooing voices, low and sweet,--
Graceful games and friendly meetings,
Do I daily watch and see.
For these happy little neighbors
Always seem at peace to be.
On my window-ledge, to lure them,
Crumbs of bread I often strew,
And, behind the curtain hiding,
Watch them flutter to and fro.
Soon they cease to fear the giver,
Quick are they to feel my love,
And my alms are freely taken
By the shyest little dove.
In soft flight, they circle downward,
Peep in through the window-pane;
Stretch their gleaming necks to greet me,
Peck and coo, and come again.
Faithful little friends and neighbors,
For no wintry wind or rain,
Household cares or airy pastimes,
Can my loving birds restrain.
Other friends forget, or linger,
But each day I surely know
That my doves will come and leave here
Little footprints in the snow.
So, they teach me the sweet lesson,
That the humblest may give
Help and hope, and in so doing,
Learn the truth by which we live;
For the heart that freely scatters
Simple charities and loves,
Lures home content, and joy, and peace,
Like a soft-winged flock of doves.

Just another reason why intensive farming of animals has to stop...
Infectious diseases spread rapidly in amongst intensively farmed animals which is leading to the over-use of antibiotics by farmers on their animals. This has raised fears that antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria might develop which could infect humans. This is especially bad, as farmers are using some of our most potent antibiotics that we use as out last line of defence when others fail. If these antibiotics become useless then that is very bad. And the farmers are buying these antibiotics in off vets and using them in an unregulated way!
New technology makes cat and fish invisible...

Copper Mine in Afghanistan
Underneath some historical ruins in Afghanistan lies a vast copper mine. It is miners vs archaeologists at the moment debating whether the copper should be mined at the cost of the ruins. I understand that Afghanistan is very poor and needs the money, but they should not have to find fortune at the expense of their cultural heritage, especially to sell copper to the developed world that totally over uses resources as it is. I know we have a global shortage of copper, but there are other ways to get copper (bioleaching, phytomining, recycling etc.) or they could just start using an alternative metal or better yet stop making so much unnecessary stuff!!! This is a sad sad story.

The North-South Divide
If Great Britain was a body, it's a bit like it receiving a slap in the face, a Chinese burn and a kick in the stomach so that it can get a pedicure for its toes. Is it not time for some devolution of power from the South to the North? I don't think the North should be independent from the South, I just think the power balance should be addressed. Perhaps they could have their own elected regional assembly? I don't know. Then maybe the North would get the care and the attention it deserves.

Arethusa
The story
According to the myth, the river god Alpheius fell in love with Arethusa after she bathed in his waters. Pursued by Alpheius, Arethusa prayed to Artemis, the virgin goddess of the hunt, to save her. Artemis answered Arethusa by spiriting her off to the island of Ortygia and transforming her into a spring. Undeterred by Artemis's interference, Alpheius flowed under the sea to Ortygia, where he united with Arethusa by mingling his waters with hers in the spring.
Painting by Arthur Bowen Davies
Poem by Percy Shelley
Arethusa arose,
From her couch of snows,
In the Acroeraunian mountains.
From cloud and from crag,
With many a jag,
Sheparding her bright fountains.
She leapt down the rocks,
With her rainbow locks,
Streaming among the streams.
Her steps paved with green,
The downward ravine,
Which slopes to the Western gleams.
And gliding and springing,
She went, ever singing,
In murmurs as soft as sleep.
The Earth seemed to love her,
And Heaven smiled above her,
As she lingered towards the deep.
Then Alpheus bold,
On his glacier cold,
With his trident the mountains strook.
And opened a chasm,
In the rocks with a spasm,
All Erymanthus shook.
And the black south wind,
It concealed behind,
The urns of the silent snow.
And Earthquake and thunder,
Did rend in sunder,
The bars of the spring below.
The beard and the hair,
Of the River-god were,
Seen through the torrent's sweep.
As he followed the light,
Of the fleet nymph's flight,
To the brink of the Dorian deep.
"Oh save me! Oh guide me!,
And bid the deep hide me,
For he grasps me now by the hair!"
The loud ocean heard,
To its blue depth stirred,
And divided at her prayer.
And under the water,
The Earth's white daughter,
Fled like a sunny beam.
Behind her descended,
Her billows unblended,
With the brackish Dorian stream.
Like a gloomy stain,
On the emerald main,
Alpheus rushed behind.
Like an eagle pursueing,
A dove to its ruin,
Down the streams of the cloudy wind.
Under the bowers,
Where the ocean powers,
Sit on their pearled thrones.
Through the coral woods,
Of the weltering floods,
Over heaps of unvalued stones.
Through the dim beams,
Which amid the streams,
Weave a network of coloured light.
And under the caves,
Where the shadowy waves,
Are as green as the forest's night.
Outspeeding the shark,
And the sword-fish dark,
Under the ocean foam.
And up through the rifts,
Of the mountain clifts,
They passed to their Dorian home.
And now from their fountains,
In Enna's mountains,
Down one vale where the morning basks.
Like friends once parted,
Grown single-hearted,
They ply their watery tasks.
At sunrise they leap,
From their cradles steep.
In the cave of the shelving hill.
At noon-tide they flow,
Through the woods below,
And the meadows of Asphodel.
And at night they sleep,
In the rocking deep,
Beneath the Ortygian shore.
Like spirits they lie,
In the azure sky,
When they love but live no more.

Benefits Bill...
Good quote from 'The Now Show' on Radio 4 this evening...
'Somehow immigrants seem to be able to simultaneously take all the jobs AND lounge around on benefits'
Now the government our whipping up such a unnecessary panic about immigrants who cannot speak English. By the Guardian's calculation the possible cost of this is just 0.2% if the total benefits bill, but going on the focus it has been given by the Torys you would assume it was much greater. They are just cashing in on prejudices, feeding the public's false assumptions to win votes.

HA!
The London Academy of Excellence, will have a selective admissions policy requiring five As at GCSE. The sixth form college will have an academic focus, offering only a choice of 12 "hard" subjects including maths, physics and history.
The Headmaster said: "We're not trying to cream off the best and brightest of the East End. We're trying to identify a bigger pool of talent. There are lots of bright children doing the wrong GCSEs, not being motivated properly, and dropping out of school at 16." Yeh, none of which you will be recruiting! I wonder how many of those will have achieved five A grades at GCSE - Approximately zero! If they've achieved five A grades, I doubt they've chosen the wrong GCSEs, I expect they are well motivated and I'm pretty damn sure they would not be planning to drop out of school at 16. Ridiculous.

Free Press vs. State Regulated Press
Commentators from the right are crying out that 'The role of the free press is to hold the government to account, not the other way around.' I don't think this is the real reason why they don't want a state-regulated press. They are just using this as an excuse. In reality it's just because they don't like state regulation of anything and because they want to protect free speech no matter what the cost. They pretend that the new press regulation deal won't work in practice when actually it probably will and will help to protect ordinary people from the inconsiderate, unfeeling wrong doings of the press. Of course it needs to be a completely independent body, but one would hope such a thing could be created. It will be interesting to see which newspapers sign up to the deal offered to them...Yes it is an optional regulatory system!
Hopefully the new system will continue to allow good investigative journalism but will seek to stop bullying and harassment that goes under the cover of 'free speech'. It does seem though that the way the government carried out the talks in the lead up to the deal, with these much talked about 'late night meetings behind closed doors' was unwise and has understandably led to a negative reaction to much needed reforms.
In conclusion, I think we need more press regulation carried out by a completely independent body, as recommended in the Leveson Report. If this can be achieved, the newspapers should agree to this and people should stop regarding the plan as a waste of time that will lead to over-censorship. Such comments come from melodramatic whingers that need to wake up to what needs to be done.

China's TV Broadcast of the 'Execution Parade'
The last moments of four foreign prisoners have been aired on state television. This has elicited a polarised response from the public, some condemning it as morally reprehensible and others have seen it as a very good deterrent, to show people what the consequences can be of committing crimes.
I am strongly of the opinion that capital punishment is wrong in all cases, so if the government is doing something that is wrong, is it not better that the people see the reality of what is happening, rather than it all taking place 'behind closed doors'? Then again, I would be worried about the upset that this 'execution parade' being shown on TV may have caused the families of those being executed. Of course, terrible crimes have been committed by these prisoners and I'm not oblivious to the terrible pain the families of the victims must feel as well.
Sorry for the disturbing picture of a lethal injection facility posted below, but I though I better have the courage of my convictions...

Titanic 2: AAAAAH!
An Australian mining tycoon has decided to rebuild the titanic, possibly even a fleet of them.
He says that he hope that tradition can survive and that he can replicate the Edwardian age, its manners and its attitudes, the code of chivalry and old English school attitude. Didn't these upper class people aboard the Titanic care more about themselves, their money and showing off than anything else? And as for code of chivalry, did the Edwardian men really treat women better and respect them more than they do on average today?
The tycoon Palmer, sees the Titanic 2 as a symbol of love and togetherness and yet he is keen to replicate the class structure of the original Titanic right down to the steerage class. What??? Isn't this an oxymoron?? Somebody locate an ice berg!

Liu Bolin/Harold and Maude
I very much like Chinese artist Liu Bolin's 'Hiding in the City' series. This short video talks about the political ideas behind it:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/video/2013/feb/19/china-art-liu-bolin-invisible-man
In 2005 his art studio was torn down by the government and he wanted to protest in response to this He says being an individual is about your relationship with your surroundings and not letting them swallow you up (like they do in his art work). His art work is commenting on a persons choice to either just be a dot in history or make your mark on history. This sentiment, reminding me of my favourite scene from my favourite film 'Harold and Maude' - the flower scene. See here:

The Spare Bedroom Tax
Sounds good in principle... but in practice it is NOT! (A statement which can be applied to many Tory policies, although many of them just sound bad altogether!)
So what is it all about?
Council housing residents who have a spare room will be given two options...either move into smaller council housing or pay a tax on the spare room. Sounds good? Hmm not so much. Why?
1. Firstly 90% of them don't have the option, as there won't be the smaller properties available for them to move into, so they will be forced to pay the tax even if they don't even want the spare room!
2. For those that do have another room available, this could mean moving far away from their home area (possibly hundreds of miles!) that they have grown up in, their children go to school in and where the rest of their family live, who they might depend on for childcare.
3. This will affect families who have had a child die so are left with a spare room.
4. A third of those affected by the spare bedroom tax will be disabled people.
5. For those who are forced to keep or choose to keep the spare room, this will leave many with an impossibly small amount of money to live on.
6. There won't even be an exemption for divorced parents who want the spare room for when their child/children come to stay with them
I'm sure the list of negative consequences could go on.
Another problem is that planners are sitting on land and not building on it until they think the rent/sale prices will rise. The government should force them to build now or sell to another developer. Reminds me of the Housemartin's song 'Build'. See here:

Pope Benedict XV!
Pope Benedict was a particularly conservative pope who refused to change the church's traditional lines on celibacy, homosexuality, abortion and contraception. He is now though the first Pope to resign in 600 years and his resignation will mean that future popes will be free to resign when appropriate. I like the quote from The Independent, that I read in The Week; 'Pope Benedict's resignation could be the most modernising act he has ever committed'. Here is a picture of the young Pope Benedict:
2012 DA14/Melancholia
I was shocked to read in this February's National Geographic, that the recent asteroid that passed us by (2012 DA14), was at its nearest to us, ten times closer than the moon. Interestingly, NASA, have put out a statement, saying that the meteorite that hit Russia causing many injuries coincidentally on the same day had no connection with DA14. An unfortunate consequence of reading about all this this was that it brought back to me images from the deeply disturbing film 'Melancholia'. A film that I watched months ago but still can't quite shake off. It depicted the end of the world, in a very silent, cold, but excruciating way. It is chilling. If you are going to watch it, brace yourself (for impact).
P.s. I'm so scared of this film, I am not going to include a picture from the movie in this post, as it will disturb me.
P.p.s On the same topic of asteroids, as the Earth runs short of its precious metals due to their high demand in industry, entrepreneurs are already gearing up to start mining asteroids which have these metals in abundance.

From the 'I SAW YOU' Bristol Webpage. I love reading these....(Happy Valentine's Eve!)
I saw you...You were Joy, the beautiful girl in 51 on the Saturday night waiting for someone. I was Robbie, the poet full of gin. You gave me your number and ten minutes later I dropped my phone in to the club toilet, bye bye phone. Here's hoping kismet brings us back around; you seemed nice xx
I saw you...ginger bearded boy with the scuffed burgundy trainers at the Watershed watching Life in a Day on your own. You have a nice face I wish my face had said hello to it.
I saw you...well I wish I had seen you so I could say a big thankyou for returning my handbag after I left it in the shopping trolley at Westbury Park Waitrose last Saturday. Everything was in tact including the £20 cashback! May good karma come your way!
I saw you...Victoria in paperchase. i am buying fictitious reletives birthday cards just to see you.
I saw you...quite often in sainsbury's but then not for a while. Then one day I looked up and there you were, walking towards me with a bag of carrots. It was overwhelming and I didn’t know what to do. I remember thinking I should say something but I didn’t. I don't work there anymore. You had lovely brown eyes. It feels like a shame is all.
I saw.... your message "I saw you briefly, and it broke my heart all over again. I would give anything to see you again, I am so sorry I missed my chance. For what it's worth - I am completely yours now. If only you still wanted me..."
Not sure if this is the person I'm thinking of but if it is I'm just a message away as I've always been, so please just text me
I saw you...A vision dressed in black leather coat and long boots with gleaming black hair walking though the cabot circus saturday 20th August ,I loved your look so convincing ,although you probably didnt see me .I would welcome the chance to rectify that ,do these ads ever work I wonder
I saw you...on the number 7 bus from Staple Hill Going to the town centre. The most beautiful, tall brunette lady I have ever seen. Hair done up, cream jacket and denim jeans. Feel free to get in touch and let me know if you know I exist :) I'm 6ft 5 with brown hair and blue eyes and was wearing a grey jacket and jeans.
I saw you.... pretty girls of Bristol in all of your petite, early 20s glory.
There are so many of you and yet I find myself too paralysed by fear to approach any of you.

Concerning Quote...
A concerning quote I just heard from an American official speaking on radio 4...
'There comes a point when killing civilians becomes unproductive'
When's that then??! When you start I'd say!

Crow in Crisis
Walking along a street in central Bristol this morning, I saw two fire engines in the middle of a main road, that had been cordoned off. I saw the ladder being raised up to the top of a building with a fireman on top of it. But the building was not on fire. Instead a crow had got caught in a wire net that had been put up there to stop sea gulls nesting. The fireman cut the crow out of the wire and lowered it in, where the RSPCA were waiting to the receive it. We then saw them cut the remaining wire off the very disheveled crow and put him in a cage. I thought that was very nice of the emergency services to do all for one trapped bird.

Saint Jerome in his Study
While on the subject of saints and animals, I really like the story of Saint Jerome. Saint Jerome is often depicted in paintings his study as he is known to have spent a vast amount of time reading literature and writing. A lion is almost always included in the scene, as it is told that he once removed a thorn from a lion's paw and following that the lion then befriended saint Jerome and stayed by his side. You might just be able to make out the lion in the background in this painting. Somehow we know he died on exactly the 30th September 420.
A Spanish Tradition...
This picture is of a horse being ridden through fire in Spain to honour Saint Anthony, the patron Saint of animals. Hmmm... slightly ill-fitting as this seems cruel. Apparently the smoke from the fire purifies the horse.Cough Cough.

More on South American Born Food.....
It gets worse for Peru...Our insatiable appetite for asparagus means farmers are draining the country's water supply to grow it.
In addition, soya is responsible for deforestation in South America, but actually health food shoppers are not really the ones to blame for this, as apparently 97% of soya is grown for animal feed.
*The vegan shopping basket being often full of food that needs to be grown in other countries is great as it puts money into the pockets of other nations, but maybe just into the hands of rich exporters, while taking food and water out of the mouths of poorer native people, not to mention, using up fossil fuels when transporting it over to us, and in the process generating carbon dioxide.
*Please note: no offense intended to vegans. I am vegan!
This was a summary of an article I read on the Guardian Website.

Quinoa ('Keen-Wa') - Good and Bad
GOOD? Because it is a grain with a particularly high protein content so is good for vegans
BAD? Because due to increasing western demand, the price over recent years has tripled and now poorer people in Bolivia and Peru who relied on this as a staple food, can no longer afford this nourishing grain.
